Not All Chain Hoists Are Created Equal
Walk into any hardware store and you'll see chain hoists that look nearly identical — same shape, same painted finish, similar price tags. But hang 2 tons off each one for six months and the differences become obvious fast. Here's what actually matters when you're spending money on a hoist.
Load Rating: The Number That Matters Most
Every chain hoist has a rated capacity stamped on it. That number isn't a suggestion — it's the absolute maximum safe working load. Go over it and you're gambling with equipment, product, and potentially someone's life.
A common mistake: buying a 1-ton hoist for loads that regularly hit 800–900 kg. Technically within spec. Practically? You're running at 80–90% capacity constantly, which accelerates wear on the gears, chain, and brake mechanism. Buy one size up. A 2-ton hoist handling 900 kg loads will last significantly longer and operate more smoothly.
Chain Grade and Length
Most manual hoists use Grade 80 alloy steel chain. It's strong, relatively lightweight, and resistant to fatigue. Some budget models use lower-grade chain — avoid them. The chain is the single component you absolutely cannot afford to have fail.
Lift height is the other variable. Standard hoists come with 3 meters of chain. If you're working in a space with high ceilings or need to lift from ground level to a mezzanine, you'll need 5–6 meters or more. Extra chain adds weight to the unit, so factor that into your mounting calculations.
Manual vs. Lever vs. Electric
Manual chain hoists (hand chain operated) are the workhorses. Pull the chain, the load goes up. Simple, reliable, no power source needed. Best for occasional lifts where speed isn't critical.
Lever hoists (come-alongs) are smaller and work in tight spaces or at angles. They're not designed for vertical lifting of heavy loads over long distances — they're for pulling, tensioning, and short precise lifts.
Electric hoists make sense when you're lifting frequently or handling loads that would exhaust an operator manually. The upfront cost is higher, but the productivity gain pays for itself quickly in a busy shop.
Mounting: Don't Overlook This
A hoist is only as strong as what it's hanging from. Before you buy, verify that your beam, trolley, or mounting point can handle the rated load plus the weight of the hoist itself, plus dynamic forces during lifting — shock loads when a load shifts or swings. When in doubt, consult a structural engineer. A collapsed beam is not a warranty claim — it's a disaster.
Inspection and Maintenance
Chain hoists are low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. Before each use: check the chain for twisted or damaged links, verify the hook latch closes fully, and test the brake by lifting a light load a few centimeters. Once a month (or per manufacturer spec): lubricate the chain, inspect gears for wear, and check for any unusual play in the mechanism.
Replace any hoist that's been overloaded, dropped, or shows visible damage to load-bearing components. There's no "it still works fine" with lifting equipment.
